Ternate is a small but stunning volcanic island in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia, part of the famous Spice Islands. How To Get To Ternate Island

There’s an airport in Ternate (TTE) with direct flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Manado, and Ambon. If you’re coming from Bali, then you’ll need to transit in one of these places first.

You can shop for flights on Trip.com, but it’s worth noting that all of the flights in Maluku tend to be a bit pricey by Indonesian standards since this area is only served by a few airlines.

Alternatively, you can take a boat from Halmahera to Ternate, which is what I did after hiking Mount Dukono. The speedboat ride from Sofifi harbor only takes about 45 minutes and tickets are reasonably priced.

Best Ways to Get Around Ternate Island

Getting around Ternate Island, Indonesia is easy thanks to its compact size and good roads.

The island has a well-paved circular road that goes all the way around, making it simple to explore. Driving the full loop around Ternate only takes about 1.5 hours. Some smaller side roads, like the one leading to Ngade Lake, can be steep, but the main road is flat and manageable.

For transportation, you can rent a scooter in Ternate from your hotel or a local shop, or you can hire a private driver with a car, which is what we chose and found very convenient.

Ternate also has the Grab app (similar to Uber), which is great for short distance trips around the island.

Whether you prefer to ride a scooter, book a car, or use ride-hailing apps, getting around Ternate is simple and affordable, letting you enjoy all its scenic spots at your own pace.

Visit Tolukko Fort, A Historic Landmark of Ternate

One of the top attractions in Ternate, Tolukko Fort is a must‑visit for history lovers and photographers alike.

Originally built by the Portuguese in 1512 to control the lucrative spice trade in Ternate and the wider Maluku Islands (Spice Islands), the fort has changed hands many times over the centuries, from the Portuguese to the Ternate Sultanate, then to the Dutch, British, and Spanish.

Today, visitors can explore this well‑preserved fortress for a small entrance fee. Don’t miss climbing up to the rooftop of Tolukko Fort where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the majestic Mount Gamalama volcano.

Tolukko Fort is one of the most photogenic places in Ternate and offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s rich history.

Explore Kalamata Fort,  Colonial History With a View

Another one of the most popular historical landmarks in Ternate, Kalamata Fort was originally built by the Portuguese in 1540. Over the centuries, control of the fort shifted between the Ternate Sultanate and various European colonial powers, including the Dutch and Spanish.

Located on the south coast of Ternate Island, Kalamata Fort offers incredible views of the neighboring Tidore and Maitara islands across the sparkling sea. For the best experience, climb to the rooftop of the fort, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas and take stunning photos,  especially at sunset.

Kastela Beach,  Best Sunset Spot in Ternate

For an unforgettable sunset in Ternate, head to Kastela Beach, one of the island’s most scenic and photogenic spots.

The beach is lined with a group of unique, twisted trees that resemble the famous “dancing trees” of Sumba Island, making it a favorite for photographers and nature lovers alike.

It’s the perfect place to relax at the end of the day, soak in the views, and watch the sun dip below the horizon with a backdrop of calm ocean waters.

 

We only watched the sunset here one time, but the colors were incredible!

Be careful if you wade out to the trees for a closer photo. The water is shallow enough, but I almost stepped on a sea snake that was swimming around the rocks.

Ngade Lake, Iconic Viewpoint of Ternate

• Ngade Lake is one of the most scenic and iconic places to visit in Ternate, Indonesia.

• From the viewpoint, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the serene lake framed by the majestic volcanic peak of Tidore Island in the background.

• This picturesque scene is so famous it was even featured on Indonesia’s 1,000 Rupiah banknote, making it a must‑see attraction for visitors.

• Although a bicycle zipline was later installed at the viewpoint, you can still easily capture clear, unobstructed photos of the breathtaking landscape.

• Perfect for photography, sightseeing, and appreciating one of the best natural landmarks in Ternate.

They charge a fee for drone use, which we didn’t see until it was too late. There’s also a swing you can use for a small fee.

Tolire Lake,  A Mysterious Volcanic Crater in Ternate

• Tolire Lake is a striking bright green volcanic lake located at the base of the iconic Mount Gamalama volcano in Ternate, Indonesia.

• This natural wonder was created by a massive eruption of Mount Gamalama in 1775, which tragically killed over 140 people and buried a nearby village leaving behind the lake we see today.

• According to local legends, Tolire Lake is said to be guarded by a mystical white crocodile. While no crocodile sightings occurred during our visit, locals shared chilling stories of fishermen being attacked in the lake.

• In 2022, Tribun News even shared a video of a crocodile spotted swimming in the lake  sparking curiosity about how it arrived in this steep edged crater.

• Aside from the eerie legend, visitors to the viewpoint can often spot colorful wildlife, including plenty of lizards and even iguanas,  a rare sight in Indonesia.

Tolire Beach, Black Sand Beauty in Ternate

• Tolire Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Ternate, featuring dramatic black volcanic sand created by Mount Gamalama’s eruptions.

• Located just a short distance from the famous Tolire Lake, this beach offers a peaceful spot to relax and soak in the natural scenery.

• From the shoreline, you can enjoy picturesque views of Hiri Island across the sea, a perfect backdrop for photos.

• During our visit, we even spotted a vibrant red crab scurrying across the sand, pausing just long enough for a great photo opportunity.

• Tolire Beach is an excellent place to experience Ternate’s natural beauty and discover its rich volcanic landscape up close.

Batu Angus,  Volcanic Rock Field of Ternate

• Batu Angus is one of the most unique natural landmarks in Ternate, Indonesia.

• This small park showcases a vast field of jagged, black volcanic rocks left behind by the powerful eruptions of Mount Gamalama volcano over the centuries.

• Walking through Batu Angus offers a striking reminder of how volcanic activity has shaped the landscape and history of Ternate Island.

• The name “Batu Angus” literally means “Burnt Rock,” and it’s an excellent spot for photography and learning about the island’s geology.

• Rising majestically at the center of Ternate, Mount Gamalama is an active, smoking volcano and the island’s most iconic natural feature.

• You can hike to the summit of Mount Gamalama, which takes several hours starting from the village of Moya.

• The trail is steep and challenging, and because the volcano is active, climbing it does come with some risk, but the views are incredibly rewarding.

• If you prefer a less strenuous experience, you can stop at one of the midway viewpoints or use a drone to capture stunning aerial shots of the crater and surrounding landscape.

• Gamalama has erupted dozens of times throughout recorded history, leaving a profound impact on Ternate and its people.

Sulamadaha Bay,  Hidden Snorkeling Paradise in Ternate

• Sulamadaha Bay is one of the most beautiful and secluded bays in Ternate, featuring turquoise waters perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

• The best marine life and coral reefs are a bit farther out from shore, so it’s worth swimming or taking a small boat to deeper areas for the clearest views.

• This hidden bay can only be reached by parking at the nearby black sand beach and walking about 300 meters through the jungle, adding to its charm and sense of adventure.

• To the east of Sulamadaha Bay, you’ll find a second bay that serves as a harbor for trips to Hiri Island, another destination worth exploring.

Jikomalamo Beach,  Snorkeling Spot with a View of Hiri Island

• Jikomalamo Beach is another popular spot for snorkeling and swimming in Ternate, located near Sulamadaha Bay.

• While there isn’t much sandy beach area here, the calm water and beautiful views of Hiri Island make it a favorite among locals and visitors.

• The beach area is lined with plenty of small warungs (local food stalls) where you can grab snacks or drinks while enjoying the sea breeze.

Tidore Island,  Historic Rival of Ternate

• Tidore Island is Ternate’s closest neighbor and was its fierce rival in the pre‑colonial era.

• Like Ternate, Tidore played a major role in the spice trade, attracting European colonizers,  particularly the Spanish, who built Fort Taula to defend against the Portuguese.

• Tidore is similar in size to Ternate but has a slightly different shape, and it’s easy to reach with a 15‑minute boat ride.

• The highlight of visiting Tidore is hiking to the summit of Mount Kie Matubu, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding islands and sea. The hike is moderate, so plan at least half a day to complete it.

Hiri Island,  Natural Arch and Untouched Beauty

• Hiri Island lies just off the coast of Ternate and is accessible via a short boat ride from Sulamadaha Bay.

• On the northwest beach, you’ll find Batu Balubang Gurabala, a massive rock arch that makes for a stunning photo opportunity.

• When the tide is low, you can walk across the rocks and reach the arch on foot. Hiri offers a quiet escape and is perfect for nature lovers looking for a hidden gem near Ternate.

• For budget travelers, Kurnia Homestay Ternate offers a welcoming atmosphere, free breakfast, and excellent hospitality from the kind and helpful owner.

• This was where we stayed during our first visit to Ternate,  and it’s a solid choice if you’re traveling on a budget.

Essential Travel Tips for Visiting Ternate, Indonesia

Before you visit Ternate, here are some helpful tips to make your trip smooth and enjoyable.

Money & ATMs

• There are plenty of ATMs in Ternate, but most dispense 50,000 Rupiah notes, so plan accordingly.

• Many hotels, restaurants, and shops in Ternate do not accept credit cards, so it’s best to carry enough Indonesian Rupiah cash for your expenses.

Internet & Cell Service

• We had excellent 4G mobile data in Ternate using a Telkomsel SIM card, which is the most reliable provider on the island.

• Free WiFi is still uncommon and often slow,  so having mobile data is a must.

Electricity

• Ternate has reliable 24/7 electricity, and power outages are rare.

Culture & Religion

• Ternate is predominantly Muslim, but visitors generally find the atmosphere calm and welcoming. We didn’t experience any excessive noise from the mosques during our stay.

Malaria & Health

• According to a 2018 Lancet study, malaria rates in Ternate and the surrounding Spice Islands have dropped significantly,  but it’s still smart to use mosquito repellent.

• We personally did not take malaria pills while visiting, but consult your doctor beforehand.

Where to Eat in Ternate

• Many hotels and guesthouses offer meals, but you’ll also find plenty of local warungs and restaurants in town serving delicious and affordable Indonesian food.

• For travelers craving western fast food, there’s a KFC and Pizza Hut in Ternate.

• One evening, we even ordered from Solaria Restaurant and had it delivered to our guesthouse using GrabFood, which was quick and convenient.

How Many Days to Spend in Ternate, Indonesia?

• Because Ternate is a small island, you can visit most of the top attractions in Ternate,  including historical forts, beaches, and viewpoints,  in just one full day by renting a car or motorbike and driving around.

• However, if you have more time, it’s worth extending your stay to explore the nearby islands, such as:

  • Hiri Island,  known for its rock arch and natural beauty

  • Maitara Island,  perfect for quiet beaches and snorkeling

  • Tidore Island, rich in history with hiking opportunities and colonial ruins

• Staying longer allows you to enjoy a more relaxed pace, discover hidden gems, and experience the unique culture and landscapes of the surrounding Spice Islands.
